“Even when the days are long, even when times are tough, I get the privilege of feeling like I am adding value to the world and to the lives of my students.”
We are proud to announce that Sarah LeDuff, Social Studies teacher at DCP Alum Rock Middle School was selected as the state's Middle School Educator of the Year by the California League of Schools. The CLS State Educator of the Year award is given annually to California elementary, middle, and high school educators who exemplify educational excellence.
Sarah joined DCP Alum Rock Middle School in 2015 and has always prioritized student relationships. At the core of her teaching practice is a belief that beyond academics it is critical that students feel safe, known and loved. This is particularly important during the middle school years when students are undergoing such a profound personal transformation. Her students confide in her and often stay connected even after they've moved on to high school. When asked by CLS, "What have your students taught you?", she responded "My students have taught me that in the end, every day feels better when you prioritize people over paperwork. When you put the relationship before the standard."
"Her ultimate goal is not to merely teach students to pass, but to be active and informed citizens in society, who stand up for equality and what is morally right."
Sarah also shared, "As an educator, I get to teach so much more than Social Studies. I get to teach kids to challenge the world with their words instead of their fists. I get to teach kids not to shy away from help, and how successful they can be when they advocate for themselves. I get to teach them what they are capable of, and not to run away from things that scare them."
In addition to teaching Social Studies, Sarah is the 8th grade Team Lead, Humanities Department Chair, Student Government advisor and can be seen on the football field as a coach. The breadth and depth of her leadership as a teacher and staff member are remarkable. Please join us in congratulating Sarah LeDuff for this recognition.
