San Jose CA – Downtown College Prep (DCP) has named Peter Settelmayer as its new CEO according to an announcement by Board Chair, Maria Arellano. Settelmayer takes the helm of the organization on July 19.
Settelmayer, who prefers to be known as Pete, comes to DCP from City Year where he has served as Vice President and Executive Director for the last four years. Prior to joining City Year in San Jose, he served as Founder and Executive Director of Westside Atlanta Charter School from 2013 to 2017. He has taught and been a Principal and Administrator in the Atlanta public school system. He began his career at The Walt Disney Company after obtaining his BS in education and MS in urban educational leadership at Georgia State University.
“We were fortunate to have a number of highly qualified candidates as a result of our four-month national search,” said Maria Arellano.
“Pete is passionate about education for first-generation college bound students. It is clear that he resonates deeply with the work that we do at DCP.”
Incoming Board Chair, Kathryn Hanson, who led the Board search committee, added, “Pete’s depth of experience will be a tremendous asset as he leads DCP to the next level of success. He has served as a teacher, an instructional coach, a Principal, a charter school founder, and an ED of a non-profit serving local schools and students. We look forward to Pete’s ability to build relationships both with all the DCP constituents and more broadly in the community.”
Settelmayer is a member of the Racial Equity Action Leadership (REAL) Coalition and the Non-profit CEO Diversity, Equity and Inclusion affinity group of the American Leadership Forum (ALF).
DCP operates four campuses in San Jose authorized by both San Jose Unified and the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Acombined high school and middle school at the newly renovated Southern Lumber site on Monterey Road, another newly constructed middle school campus on Ocala Ave., and a second high school on the grounds of Independence High School. DCP teachers have been recognized with numerous regional and state-level awards. In 2018, DCP formed a vibrant Diversity-Equity-Inclusion working group focused on deepening the school’s commitment to equity and anti-racism.
With a dedicated scholarship program that has granted $2M in scholarships to close the college affordability gap for students, DCP boasts one of the highest college-going, persistence and completion rates in the county among low-income and Latino students. Today, several DCP alumni serve as teachers and staff at the schools while other alumni pursue careers in engineering, nursing, and social services in and beyond the immediate community.
Settelmayer will follow Co-Founder and Executive Director, Jennifer Andaluz, who led DCP for twenty years and who finished her service in June 2021. “Jennifer built DCP from the first charter in San Jose to a charter group of four schools successfully serving first generation students. We thank her for her service and intense dedication to the mission,” commented Board Chair, Maria Arellano.

DCP opera cuatro campus en San José autorizados por el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San José y la Oficina de Educación del Condado de Santa Clara.
